RIFA

Dear Parents,

I very much want our class to complete a community service project before Thanksgiving!  I spoke with RIFA today and they are in NEED of POP-TOP Soup cans for their snack pack program. The cans need to be pop-tops so that students can make them on their own. The snack pack program provides food to 912 elementary age children in JMCSS.  I want to set a HIGH goal and try to collect one can for each child before Thanksgiving break!  If we meet our goal of 912, the students will get a fun reward:)

The Market

Dear Parents,

The multi-cultural projects are due by the end of the day Wednesday.  Students have the freedom to be creative and complete their project in the style that best fits their strengths.  If anyone has any souvenirs, pictures, or items from China that they would like to display in the market, please send them by Wednesday.  I had considered handing out fortune cookies at the market, until my husband reminded me that there are NO fortune cookies in China, this is actually a Chinese-American tradition.  So, I decided that it would be fun and easy to give each guest a Green Tea packet.  Every restaurant and grocery we visited in China had Green tea; it is a huge part of their culture! If anyone would like to send a pack of Green Tea, just make sure that it is a box with individually wrapped tea bags. We will probably need at least 300 tea bags or more. If every student brings one box of 20 Green Tea bags, then we would have enough :)  I do not need any parents to work our table, however parents are invited to attend the market on Friday and tour with their child.  I am very happy to be back, and we are going to be very busy learning each and every day!!

Updates

Ms. Hughes will be starting tomorrow in the classroom full time.  This will give me a chance to see how things are going for a couple days before leaving the country.  The students are doing great, working their plans, and learning each day.:)  I am so proud of them!  We have an amazing class this year!

Reminders: Friday is Inside Out/Backwards day or spirit shirt day
Everyone has been doing great about bringing healthy snacks.  We do have some allergies in the class: peanuts, eggs, yogurt, and aspartame.

Remember that if you have time in the evenings, reading aloud and math facts are excellent things to practice!

Also, Parent-Teacher Conferences are scheduled for September 3rd but I will not be back in the country at that time.  If I have any specific issues, I will email parents directly and feel free to do the same.  September 3rd will be a half day for students and there will be NO school for students on September 4th.

Blue and Yellow Day

Hello Parents,

Tomorrow is Blue and Yellow Day, which means that students can wear clothes that are blue or yellow.  They do not have to be uniform clothes, but they do need to be appropriate for school.  Also, I wanted to let you guys know that we had 3 kids out sick today, so watch out for illness :(  I am doing my best to clean and disinfect each day, but please talk to your kids about washing hands, covering their mouths when they cough, etc...

Wednesday of next week will be my last day before I go to China.  Dr. Harris and I are finalizing details with the substitute tomorrow, so you will receive a note in your child's folder tomorrow afternoon about this. Originally I was going to be on maternity leave for the entire semester, but after MUCH thought and prayer, I have decided to have a tentative plan of returning to school on October 18th.  I just don't think I can bare to miss the entire semester! :)  I love all your children and we are going to have a wonderful year!!

We received word from China today that we need to be there next weekend, so we will most likely fly out next Thursday or Friday!  I assure you that Dr. Harris and I are working very diligently on a plan for while I am away! I will keep you updated as more information is finalized!

Thursday - 9:35 - 10:35 Art/Music

Computer Lab - Not scheduled yet

Recess - 2:25 - 2:45 Weather Permitting

Tips for the School Year:

Work plans- Work plans are to be done at school; they are not homework unless specified by the teacher.  All students work at different paces....every child may not complete their work plan each day and this is OKAY!

Homework - I do not have homework plans.  I believe that home time should be spent with family, resting, bonding, and following nightly routines.  If you would like your child to do homework, there are always things that they can work on such as: math facts, handwriting, reading aloud, spelling, and being creative.

Birthdays - Because we do not have assistants in the classroom this year and we are trying to be a Silver Healthy School, we are asking that parents do not bring Birthday treats or celebration items.  Other ideas for your child's birthday: Eat lunch with your child in the cafeteria, send a special healthy snack for the day (fresh fruit, cheese, or veggies), or you may send treat bags for the students and I will send them home at the end of the day!

Snacks
 A list of approved healthy snacks for our school district is available online.  It is very important that we have healthy snacks within our classroom on a daily basis and for special events.  It would be very helpful if snacks could be in individual packages or Ziploc bags, due to the fact that we will not have an assistant this year. We have 22 students.  We will also be skipping the cupcakes and sweets for birthdays this year, because we are trying to become a Silver Healthy School!

H.O.P.E.

Parents,

I am wanting to start something that I call the H.O.P.E. project; standing for Helping Other People Endlessly

--
Our first project is going to be collecting things for Ms. Kelly Hoeflich.  Ms. Hoeflich is a teacher at South Elementary, who will be volunteering in Haiti this summer at a children's home.  She is collecting supplies to take with her for the kids.  If you would like to donate anything, we will be collecting for the month of Feb. weeks and then taking the items to Ms. Hoeflich.

Supplies needed:

* Scissors
* liquid glue (glue sticks dry out in the heat)
* tablet paper
* notebook paper
* construction paper (any color)
* counting manipulatives
* pencils
*shoes (any size! We have kids from 2-21 at the Children's home in Haiti)

Thanks,
Mrs. B

Third levels

Tomorrow my 3rd levels will have a review multiplication quiz on their 1s, 2s, 3s, and 4s.   We will also soon begin working on more word problems, multiple digit addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
